I can't remember exactly what went wrong, but I do know it wasn't our fault! When I went to meet the bus it had arrived earlier than anticipated (and, it turns out, in the wrong place), and so I went back to the hotel to see if they were there. They weren't at that stage so I went back to the area around the Pompidou Centre to see if they were in fact on a later bus. That part of town was not particularly safe at that time, but all turned out well when I once again went back to Bastille and voila! We were reunited and relieved. These days of course everyone has a mobile phone and you probably wouldn't get too many bus drivers abandoning their passengers to go to the pub, hopefully.
